Doctor Strange 2 Unused Concept Art Shows Stephen & His Sister as Children

Unused concept art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teases a deleted scene showing Stephen Strange and his sister as children.

Recently shared concept art of an early Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scene teases a deleted scene featuring Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as a child. The fantasy-horror film follows the titular hero who is thrust on a journey through the multiverse as he attempts to protect the young inter-dimensional being, America Chavez (Xóchitl Gomez), from Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) who has since been corrupted by the Darkhold. Released in early May, the film proved to be an incredible success with audiences as it pulled in over $950 million at the box office, making it the second-highest grossing film of 2022 behind Top Gun: Maverick.

After Wanda finally captures Chavez, she uses the young hero’s powers and sends Doctor Strange into an incursion-destroyed world. There he meets an alternate version of himself dubbed, Sinister Strange. When challenged to prove that he is really a Doctor Strange and not some cruel trick, he reveals that he had a sister, Donna Strange, who died when the two were children. They were playing on the ice but she fell in the cold water and Doctor Strange could not save her. The scene was initially intended to be in the film, however, the heartbreaking moment was removed early in production.

Concept artist, Darrell Warner, recently took to social media to share early concept art of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which imagined what the flashback scene may have looked like. The artist posted five images of his concept art, four of which featured a child that bears a striking resemblance to Cumberbatch dressed in winter clothes. One illustration is of Donna standing on a frozen lake under moonlight. Warner revealed that he based his renderings on an early script by writer-director Scott Derrickson prior to Sam Raimi’s appointment as director. Once Raimi joined the production, the scene was subsequently dropped. Check out the images below:

All of the illustrations of the scene have a large moon behind the characters with the colored images featuring dark backgrounds indicating that the flashback would most likely have taken place at night. However, these early renderings only feature character designs and do not show how any of the tragic events of the scene¬†would have played out. Without further information about the scene from Derrickson’s early script, why the MCU’s Doctor Strange and his sister Donna were out on the ice at night and what exactly happened to cause such a terrible loss will remain a mystery.

The early Doctor Strange concept art show that Donna’s death within the MCU appears to be used in a similar way to that of her Marvel Comics counterpart. In the original source material, Donna suffered a cramp while swimming with Stephen and drowned. This caused an immense amount of guilt for the young boy and it fueled his growth into the hero he would later become. Seeing such an important scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would have given a visual representation of Doctor Strange’s relentless drive to become the most skilled surgeon, sorcerer, and superhero to save as many lives as possible. Although the small moment in the film with Sinister Strange proved an adequate substitute, it would have been welcomed to see how his trauma shaped the rest of his life.
